Newcastle, King County
Creosote removal in Newcastle starts at $245. That figure applies to heavy flaky deposits a standard brush cannot shift, cleared with rotary tools. Hard, glazed creosote, the kind that looks like poured tar, needs a chemical treatment and a return visit, and it is priced after the camera has shown how far up the flue it extends.

Creosote is unburned wood smoke that condensed on a cool flue wall. It forms in stages: loose soot first, then crunchy black flakes, then a dense glaze that a brush slides over. Newcastle is not a wood-heating city. The Census estimates that no household here relies on wood as its primary fuel, with a margin of error of about twenty homes. A wood fireplace in a home heated by gas or electricity is lit for the evening, and that pattern of use is the one that favors glaze.
Flue temperature decides where smoke condenses, and height and exposure decide flue temperature. Newcastle's hazard annex reports that more than half of the city's land falls under critical-area constraints, steep slopes included. WeatherSpark's terrain data shows 1,198 feet of elevation range within two miles.
On a sloping lot a fireplace can sit on the lower level, with a long exterior stack rising past one or two floors above it. That is a great deal of masonry to warm with an evening fire, and for about three and a half months of cool season, by WeatherSpark's dates, it starts every burn cold. When we find glaze in such a flue, we look for it in the upper third first, where the smoke has cooled the most.
Every creosote removal we do in Newcastle includes:
Smoke coming back into the room, or a smell that won't go? Book the inspection first.
Book nowA short fire in a cold chimney never warms the flue enough to carry its own smoke out cleanly. Smoke loses heat as it climbs and leaves its tars behind on the liner. Add damp wood and the effect is stronger. Under Puget Sound Clean Air Agency rules, what goes on the grate must be seasoned dry wood or a manufactured log, and the plume from the chimney is held to a 20 percent opacity limit; a fire that smokes heavily is also one that is coating its flue. CSIA puts the threshold for sweeping at an eighth of an inch of buildup, and sooner where any glaze is visible.
Trees come down in Newcastle with some regularity. The city's hazard annex speaks of wind events every couple of years that fell trees and cut power, in a city where many lots touch densely wooded natural areas. A fallen tree bucked into rounds is tempting firewood, and burned the same winter it is far too wet. Green wood smolders, and smoldering is how glaze is made.
The same trees work on the chimney from the top. Oregon State University Extension describes moss and the litter it gathers as holding moisture where they settle. Needles packed against a cap screen narrow the outlet, the draft slows, and smoke lingers in the flue long enough to condense. Clearing the cap is therefore part of creosote removal, not an extra.
The camera shows whether the flue holds flakes, glaze or both, and where each begins and ends.
Rotary rods take off flaky creosote without scoring the liner, with the vacuum sealed to the firebox.
A modifier is applied to hardened creosote and left to work; it changes the glaze into a dry crust over several days.
The crust is brushed out on the return visit and the liner is filmed again, so you see bare walls.

Newcastle is a 4.2-square-mile hillside city beside Cougar Mountain, incorporated in 1994, with homes with a median build year of 1999, close to half of them built since 2000. We work every part of it — the Coal Creek basin, the May Creek basin included.

It is the fuel of a chimney fire. The State Fire Marshal's office, writing in September 2026, attributed 77 percent of the 2024 heating fires in homes to a chimney, flue or fuel burner. Do not light the fireplace again until the glaze has been dealt with.
Those logs can dry out light deposits and make sweeping easier. They do not remove glaze, and they do not replace an inspection of what is on the flue walls.
Grading the flue by camera is a $99 plus tax charge for each chimney, which we take back off the removal price when the quote is approved.
