Much of what we clean out of ducts was put there by a builder. Census estimates show about 76.5% of Snoqualmie's housing built since 2000, 53.1% of Maple Valley's and 48.6% of Newcastle's, where roughly three units in ten date from the 2010s alone. Drywall dust and sawdust from construction settle in new ductwork and stay. Smoke adds a second layer: King County's public health department says wildfire smoke plumes can degrade air quality for days at the short end and for weeks at the long end. We attach a HEPA-filtered collector to the trunk line, hold the system under suction, and work each branch so the dust moves toward the machine.
Wood smoke is a winter matter too. The Puget Sound Clean Air Agency reports that in 2024 home-heating wood smoke lifted fine-particle readings over its health goal on up to four days that winter, in a year when the region was spared wildfire smoke. A forced-air system moves the same air through the same ducts all day. Dust that settles inside is picked up again at every cycle, loads the filter early and coats the blower. After a remodel, a move-in or a smoky August, the amount in circulation jumps.
We will not oversell this. Cleaning takes out what has collected in the ductwork. It treats no illness and it does not replace a good filter. Smoke season is the clearest example. The Puget Sound Clean Air Agency expects a changing climate to bring more wildfires, and possibly more of their smoke, to the Puget Sound region, and on August 1, 2026 a declaration from the Governor placed all of Washington under a wildfire emergency. While smoke is in the air, filtration and closed windows do the protecting. Duct cleaning belongs afterward, to remove the fine particles that settled in the system so the furnace does not redistribute them in November. Technique matters as well: without sealed suction and HEPA capture, a cleaning can scatter more dust than it collects.
